Conventional Wisdom

April 18th, 2008 by Randy Oxentenko

There’s an old saying that says… just about anything.

On the one hand… …but on the other hand…
Actions speak louder than words. The pen is mightier than the sword.
Look before you leap. He who hesitates is lost.
Many hands make light work. Too many cooks spoil the broth.
Clothes make the man. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Better safe than sorry.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Out of sight, out of mind.
What will be, will be. Life is what you make it.

Cross your bridges when you come to them. Forewarned is forearmed.
The more, the merrier. Two’s company; three’s a crowd.

Looking back…

Looking Back

Old platitudes sometimes seem so meaningful, but they often contradict each other. Consider the following two expressions. Can they both apply simultaneously?

“Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”
     – Henry David Thoreau

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
     – George Santayana
